Re: Olympic Peninsula: Queets River

Hi Robie, I dropped my bike off at the South Beach State park, then parked the car at the Skyline Trailhead, on the NF Quinault (North Shore Road past Lake Quinault). Hiked the Skyline Trail to Lake Beauty (needed crampons in July), then cross country down to the Queets. Paddled down to the ocean an...

Re: Olympic Peninsula: Queets River

I paddled the Queets from just below the confluence with Paull Creek to South Beach campground, which is about 2 miles north of the mouth of the river, then did a bike shuttle back to the NF Quinault. I carried one nasty class IV-V rapid with a lot of wood in it, and carried around a few log jams lo...

Re: Mendocino, CA -- Main Fork of Eel River

I have done the bike shuttle 3 times from Alderpoint to Dos Rios or Alderpoint to Covelo...it's a very long bike ride!! I've ended up hitching rides partway every time. From Alderpoint to Dos Rios I went on river left with a short run on Hwy 101 (at around 3 AM, no cars), and for the entire run I we...

Re: South Fork American?

The South Fork of the American is a great packrafting run, particularly the Gorge section, because there's a (fairly) new bike/horse/hiking trail that runs from the takeout bridge @ Salmon Falls to the Greenwood river access. If you want to run the upper section as well, there is a little-used road ...

Re: The Paddle Thread: consolidation & index

To slightly contradict conventional wisdom: I have a MantaRay Hybrid w fiberglass shaft that has been functionally a 2-piece paddle for 2 years, the blades having been stuck on the shaft. Finally decided to tackle the problem by soaking overnight in water, to loosen the salt/rust I figured was gluin...

Re: Where to go - March 12th-20th?

One suggestion: fly into sacramento, CA, and run the gorgeous whitewater nearby: Feather, NF Yuba, SF Yuba, NF American, MF American, SF American, Cosumnes, Mokelumne, McCloud, etc. Gorgeous in March.

Re: Broken Aqua Bound Paddle...Uh oh

I broke an Aqua Bound a few months ago: snapped the shaft and lost a blade. Completely my fault: I flipped the Witchcraft in a hole and snapped the paddle on a rock on the way over. The customer service dept was amazing, and sold me a replacement blade & shaft for cheap. Great customer service!

Re: California - Monterey area

You have to time the water just right, but I've hiked a kayak the 10 miles into Sykes Hot Springs and paddled out the Big Sur River to the ocean. Class IV, very committed (steep, poision oak-infested banks, no contact with civilization). Can't wait to return in a packraft! 116_1665.JPG 116_1696.JPG ...
